As Executive Chef of Loch Lloyd Country Club (Kansas City, Mo.), Anita Moore aims to ensure every member of her team feels seen and heard. This requires accountability, understanding, and respect from all sides.
“No one’s going to do anything that I won’t do,” Moore says. “And that’s what I always tell my team. … I think them seeing me on the line with them, it [communicates to them], ‘she really has our back,’ and that’s what I want every team member to know.”
The result, she says, is that staff “work together more, they want to come in more, they’re more excited about events.” The energy is different, both in front and back of house.
Ultimately, she notes, keeping the lines of communication open is key.
“There’s always a stigma [between] back of house, front of house—I hate that,” Moore notes. “If the front of house and the back house are communicating effectively, the night runs smoother, events run smoother, and overall, the the goal is to make the member happy.”
