Joseph Leonardi’s career reflects a level of achievement reached by very few chefs. As a Certified Master Chef through the American Culinary Federation, he belongs to a small group of culinarians who have demonstrated the highest standard of technical skill, discipline, and consistency in the profession.
The Certified Master Chef examination is widely regarded as one of the most demanding assessments in the culinary world. Earning the designation requires not only advanced knowledge and execution, but the ability to perform under sustained pressure while maintaining exacting standards. Those who achieve it are entrusted with preserving the traditions of the craft while helping define its future.
Leonardi’s career has consistently reflected that responsibility.
He has competed and led at the highest levels of international culinary competition, serving as Captain of the American Culinary Federation Culinary Team USA in 2012 and later as Team Manager in 2016 at the Internationale Kochkunst Ausstellung in Erfurt, Germany. Earlier, as a member of the 2008 ACF Culinary Regional Team USA, he earned a gold medal in the cold-food salon, contributing to a first-place overall finish among 62 teams.
Alongside his competition career, Leonardi has led culinary programs at some of the country’s most respected private clubs. He served nearly a decade as Executive Chef of the Somerset Club in Boston before moving to The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he spent seven years as Director of Culinary Operations. In 2023, he joined St. Andrews Country Club as Director of Culinary and was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2024, expanding his influence beyond the kitchen to help shape the broader hospitality experience.

Throughout his career, mentorship has remained central to his work. Chefs including Geoffrey Lanez, Jesus Olmedo, Tony Le, and Michael Shannon are among those who developed under his guidance, carrying forward the standards and discipline he instilled. His influence is reflected not only in their accomplishments but in the continued presence of his approach to fundamentals, preparation, and professionalism in the kitchens they now lead.
Colleagues frequently describe Leonardi’s impact as lasting well beyond individual operations. His competition programs and teaching philosophy continue to shape chefs who go on to compete, lead teams, and mentor others in turn.
Leonardi holds associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees from Johnson & Wales University, reflecting a long-standing commitment to both technical training and leadership development. His work as curator of Leonardi Apiary & Gardens further demonstrates an ongoing interest in product integrity and the relationship between ingredients and craft.
Across each stage of his career, the throughline is consistent: precision, discipline, and a commitment to preparing the next generation to meet the same standard.
