What is the World Association of Chefs’ Societies?

By Lauren Newman, Contributing Writer | December 17, 2021

The World Association of Chefs’ Societies offers a plethora of global resources to chefs of all levels.

The World Association of Chefs’ Societies, known as Worldchefs, is a dynamic global network of 110 chef associations worldwide. Founded in 1928 at the Sorbonne University in Paris with Auguste Escoffier as the founding President, solidarity, respect, and the preservation of culinary arts outline their mission.

Worldchefs is a leading voice in the hospitality industry and represents culinary professionals at all levels and across all specialties. Through the core focus areas of education, networking, competition, and humanitarian and sustainability, Worldchefs is committed to advancing the profession as well as raising culinary standards and social awareness.

Worldchefs recognizes culinary education programs worldwide with the world’s first culinary certification. The Worldchefs Recognition of Quality Culinary Education program outlines 12 standards of quality culinary education and recognizes Global Educational Partners, representing over 100 culinary schools and training programs. Being part of this network offers culinary schools a seal of approval, verifying that they are skillfully preparing the next generation of culinarians and committed to the highest standards of quality culinary education.

Within the global community of Worldchefs, there are also smaller sub-communities. These communities help chefs find like-minded people in the industry to network with. Along with offering networking opportunities, Worldchefs also hosts the biennial Worldchefs Congress & Expo.

For those who want to compete in culinary competitions, Worldchefs offers competition seminars in a variety of areas for chefs to show off their skills in the kitchen with certified culinary judges. They also host the prestigious competition the Global Chefs Challenge, where chefs from all over the world compete in a choice of three different categories and prove their mastery of the kitchen.

Worldchefs also seeks to alleviate poverty and food insecurity, offers crisis support, and promotes sustainability. Their nonprofit, Feed the Planet, is dedicated to creating a more equitable and sustainable food system. World Chefs Without Borders is also their humanitarian initiative to provide relief services to those affected by natural disasters.

Through the organization’s many initiatives and industry-related resources, chefs can gain valuable experience and participate in beneficial networking and professional development opportunities. Worldchefs is dedicated to maintaining and improving the culinary standards of global cuisines through education, training, and professional development for members. Depending on a chef’s needs and interests, there are a variety of benefits that the World Association of Chefs’ Societies can offer.
