The Country Club of Detroit’s Executive Chef, Brian Beland, CMC, has dedicated most of his life to the pursuit of culinary excellence and his passion, ambition, and talent have resulted in a career full of noteworthy achievements.
Brian Beland, CMC, is Executive Chef and Director of Food and Beverage for the Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich, where he oversees every aspect of the club’s food & beverage program.
The Country Club of Detroit is a private club with over 800 members and has hosted two United States Amateur Championship golf tournaments. Beland has also been a full-time culinary instructor at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan since 2014.
Beland began working at his family’s restaurant in his teens. After graduating from high school he pursued an education from Michigan State University in the School of Hospitality Business, graduating in December 2001. During his time at Michigan State, Beland worked in three private clubs, including the Country Club of Detroit. Beland pursued a second degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), Hyde Park, N.Y. While at CIA, Beland interned at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y. under its former executive chef, Edward Leonard, CMC.
Beland returned to CCD as Chef de Cuisine in June 2004 and in February 2006 he was promoted to Executive Chef. In 2010 he became one of only 66 Certified Master Chefs in the United States at that time. Beland’s career highlights include the American Culinary Federation Certification Commission and Chair of the CMC/CMPC certification program. He was Vice President of ACF’s Michigan Chefs de Cuisine Chapter in 2011, President for the 2013/14 term, and Chairman of the Board 2015/16.
Beland has also medaled in many culinary and ice carving competitions. As a member of the 2012 Michigan Culinary Olympic Team, Beland scored an individual gold medal in Category A in Erfurt, Germany. Also in 2011, Beland was recognized as Chef of the Year for MCCA Chapter, won the Central Regional Chef of the Year title in 2012, and went on to score a gold medal at the ACF National Chef of the Year competition. In November 2013, Beland competed at the inaugural Dubai Hospitality Championships as a member of Team USA scoring a team gold and second place overall.
